We were featured in Streetscape Magazine’s Fall issue. To read the magazine, visit their site, we are on page 27.
I would like to introduce you to Aaron. He is one of the men who lives in the Foundations of Love Home. He believes he is 27 years old but is unsure of his exact age or birthday.
Aaron was picked up on December 12, 1988, at a gas station in China. He was all by himself and was taken to an orphanage. Since no information was left with Aaron the orphanage gave him a birthday of 12-12-88, the day they picked him up. Aaron was born with polio and walks with a brace. He doesn’t use it all the time because the brace bothers his skin.
He was adopted at age 13.5 by missionaries. Aaron is the 6th of 9 children in his adoptive family. He knows his younger siblings better than the older ones. Many of them were married or in college when he was adopted into his new family. Sadly, he does not know where most of them live and has very little contact with them. He last saw his parents for 1 hour in 2016 as they were passing through visiting all the children and raising missionary funds. It has been several years since he last saw any of his siblings.
Due to his polio and other health issues, Aaron had to quit his job where he worked on an assembly line. He is late on several months’ rent and has had to cancel his car insurance because he doesn’t have any money coming in from a job or his adoptive family. Without a car, he cannot try to find work. He believes, since his parents are missionaries they cannot send him any money. Unless the money is for a medical bill, his siblings will not cover any expenses for him.
While listening to Aaron tell his story, he never once seemed as though he wanted pity or felt down because of his circumstances.
Foundations of Love is putting out a special fundraising call to help Aaron. Our goal is $4000 to help cover his bills and any future bills which may arise before his disability is approved.
Will you help Aaron to continue to be a Survivor?
We had such an amazing time at Mardi Gras in February. We had a goal to raise $1500 that night and we raised $2150. Another goal was to find someone to take care of our home’s lawn this spring and summer. Thank you, Wendell Adkins, who volunteered to take care of the lawn this year. Mike Keenoy from KELKAT, Inc. volunteered two days to work on the repairs needed at the house.
The mission of Foundations of Love is to enhance the lives and living environments of low-income adults with developmental disabilities living in St. Charles County.
In 2014 Foundations Of Love began the fulfillment of this mission by purchasing the first home. It is now fully occupied by Aaron, Joshua, and Leonard. Our goal for 2017 is to pay off the loan on the house. That amount is $70,000.
As with all not-for-profits, we have on going needs. Here are some of our current needs:
- Adopt-A-Room to help pay for monthly cleaning services.
- Support the Wishing Well Program.
- Pay off our home and purchase a home for women.
Special thanks to Merle Schneider for being our emcee and auctioneer this evening. Thank you to our Advertisers and Sponsors:
If you are interested in sponsoring any of the above needs, please contact Carol, Foundations of Love.
The Wishing Well program fulfills wishes for adults with developmental disabilities in St. Charles County, in an effort to enhance their quality of life and living environments. Wishes will be fulfilled based on receipt of a formal application, a selection process by the Foundations OF Love’s Board of Directors, and availability of resources to fulfill the request.
As of December 2016, we have granted over 275 wishes. View photos from our Wishing Well Events.
Here are some photos from our event. For more, please visit our Photo Gallery.
As I look back on 2016 with Foundations of Love I can see we had a great year! Mardi Gras in February was a great success! We were able to raise enough money to make a substantial payment on the house loan and a generous amount to add to the Wishing Well fund. We will be making Mardi Gras an annual event. Please join us on February 4th at The Christy in O’Fallon.
We celebrated having all three tenants under the roof of our house for one year! Things are going smoothly at the house. We do have some minor repairs that need to be done. The major repair right now is having the bathtub refinished. If you know of someone please pass along the information to us. If you would be interested in funding this project this would be a wonderful tax exempt donation for you!
Wishing Well – Summer
Our Wishing Well program in July and Christmas were well attended. We tried something new this summer. If you’ve looked at our website you can see that we had the ice cream truck come to the park. Everyone ate ice cream and waited for Santa to arrive – in his shorts!! It was just a little too hot for him to wear his normal Santa suit. We fulfilled 16 wishes in July.
Indulgences 2016 was a success for Foundations of Love in terms of a record number of vendors and attendees. It was held at the St. Peters Cultural Art Centre in October. The featured event of the evening was a fashion show with clothing supplied by Chico’s and jewelry by Eileen Holtzman of Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski. Mark October 10 on your calendar for the annual Indulgences event at St. Peters Cultural Art Centre again this year.
Wishing Well – Winter
The Christmas Wishing Well event was held on December 14. We received 41 applications and were able to fulfill ALL of them! It was a wonderful party. We had live music provided by one of our newest board members, Joe Johnston. Of course, Santa came – in his full Santa suit this time. All of the recipients were excited to hear their name called and have their picture taken with Santa. A big thank you goes out to the DDRB for providing their facility to us for the event. We hope to have it there next year.
I mentioned a new board member. We actually have two new members. Joe Johnston is the brother of Mary who was a recipient of a July Wishing Well request. Derrick Pierce is our other new board member. He recently retired from Ameren Mo. One other change in the board is that Karen Schneider is now serving as the Founder and CEO of the foundation.
We have had a couple of young people who have provided assistance to Foundations of Love this year. Jackson volunteered to take care of the lawn at the house. He did a fine job and we appreciate his willingness to provide this service to us. Jackson’s sister, Emma, arranged a fundraising effort for Foundations of Love. This was a project for her Leadership Class at school. Thank you to Jackson and Emma for their willingness to help Foundations of Love!
A wonderful addition to our organization is Kimberly Rupert. She has served as our virtual assistant for the last six months. She was instrumental in getting our new website up and running. Please check out the website and keep up-to-date on what is happening with Foundations of Love.
With 2017 already in process we have lots of goals for this year and we can not do this without you! Let us know how you can help Foundations of Love grow so we can provide more adults with developmental disabilities a stable place to live.
Exciting News!!! We are able to grant ALL of the wishes this year. After this event, we have gifted over 500 wishes since the Wishing Well Program started. Some of the wishes range from tickets to an event, gift cards, clothing and so much more.
The primary objective of the Wishing Well Program is to fulfill wishes of low-income adults who have developmental disabilities in an effort to enhance their quality of life and their living environments.
“The best part of our Wishing Well program is our Christmas Giveaway Celebration. Santa comes to give each recipient his/her gift and the looks on their faces and their squeals of joy are PRICELESS. It truly warms my heart and makes all the year’s work so worthwhile. Its truly the best way to kick off the holiday season and prepare for the new year.” – Karen Schneider, Founder/Chairman
The Winter Wishing Well event will be on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 from 4 – 6 pm at the Community Room at Developmental Disabilities Resource Board, 1025 Country Club Rd, St Charles, MO 63303.
“The Wishing Well program brings joy to both the recipients and the Foundations of Love board members. To see the faces light up when Santa arrives makes our day.” – Carol Weirich, President

All I can say is WOW! What a great event Indulgences was. We had a record crowd, record number of vendors and wonderful demonstrations. The fashion show – was excellent. A great big thanks to Chico’s of Chesterfield and Eileen Holtzman with Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski for showing off their beautiful bling. And last but not least our makeover winner! The Christmas Wishing Well event will be held in the Community Room at the Developmental Disabilities Resource Board (1025 Country Club Road, St. Charles, MO 63303) from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14. Santa and his elf will be there to distribute the gifts. If you would like to assist with wrapping the gifts or even contribute in some way please contact Carol.
It has been my privilege to serve as President of Foundations of Love for almost two years. I have been on the board for five years and served as the secretary for a term. During this time I have been involved in many events and situations that make me more aware of the needs in the area of low-income developmentally disabled adults.
When I was a young girl living on a farm in Iowa we had some close family friends that included Aunt Mary. Aunt Mary had a brain injury. I strongly believe that if Aunt Mary had been born in this time she would have been able to be rehabilitated. She was happy to spend time on our farm helping my mother and her sister take care of our large garden. She would sit at the picnic table and end the green beans until the chore was done. She never complained. She also loved all of the babies that came her way. Her hands would itch to hold those great nieces and nephews of hers. Aunt Mary always had a smile on her face.
So Aunt Mary is my inspiration for Foundations of Love to succeed. I’m sure that everyone knows an Aunt Mary. It is those kinds of people that are looking for a place to call home.
We are preparing for a fundraising event called Indulgences. The funds raised at this event will go towards our Wishing Well fund. It’s ironic, I think, that we are spending money to raise money for the purpose of fulfilling indulgences for those who are less fortunate than we.
Oh, the smiles on the faces of the recipients when Santa presents their gift to them! What a joy to see! The anticipation of their name being called is great, the reward of the smiles of satisfaction when they receive their gift is even greater.
Foundations of Love hosts two major fundraisers each year. In February, we host Mardi Gras and in October we host Indulgences. Because of the generosity of our donors, sponsors and attendees we have been able to provide over 500 wishes through our Wishing Well Program. In addition to the Wishing Well Program the funds have also helped to purchase our first home, which was purchased in 2014. Our goal for 2017 is to pay off this home and begin the purchase of another.
